Pre-Purchase Survey
A Pre-Purchase survey is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel because it is the most comprehensive inspection. During this survey the condition and the overall operation of the vessel is examined, including, but not limited to, structural integrity, out of water inspection, sea trial, electrical systems, propulsion system, fuel system, machinery, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance.
The purpose of a Pre-Purchase Survey is to raise awareness of the vessel’s true and complete condition before a buyer makes the ultimate decision of investing in their long term asset. Buying a boat without a mechanical survey is a dangerous gamble. Repairs can be expensive, and hidden problems with boats tend to be the most expensive of the lot, so inquiring into the true condition of a vessel can help a buyer avoid these unforeseeable problems.
A Pre-Purchase survey is not the same as a Condition and Value Survey. The difference is that a Pre-Purchase survey involves a much more in-depth and scrutinized examination of the boat’s mechanical systems. Engines, generators, electrical, fuel and hydraulic systems are inspected, operated and a detailed repair list of any damages found. Repair list is itemized and typed as a matter of importance.
Sea Trials or water testing can be performed for an additional cost.
Water Testing
Water Testing is performed with the surveyor on board and captain, broker or seller operating the boat. You are responsible for arranging for a captain. We can refer you to local USCG Licensed captains if so desired.
Vessel is operated with the engine room hatch up, computer attached to the engines if fuel injected and the surveyor analyzing the computer readings compared to the vessel’s instrumentation. The surveyor will document cruising and wide open throttle RPM, MPH and GPH because the fuel economy can be an important purchasing factor, especially with larger cruisers with twin engines.
A detailed survey report and repair list with items required to be repaired for safe commissioning and use of the vessel listed as items of importance. This list is often used for initial estimates for repairs and/or final negotiations with the seller.
